I got the latest start yet, but being a bit ahead in the schedule, it hardly mattered. It turns out, parting from family and a hearty breakfast is tougher than leaving a random hotel.
From dawn, the sun was blazing, and I was roasting all day, slapping on sunscreen like basting a rotisserie chicken. Today’s agenda was simple, bid “Auf Wiedersehen, Deutschland” and roll out the welcome mat for “Hallo, Österreich.” The road threw plenty of ups and downs my way, 15 to be exact. My legs definitely began to protest by sunset.
But then, the climax, the white peaks finally came into view, a breathtaking spectacle. This is what I’ve been pedaling towards all this time. Now facing them, I can’t say for sure I’m ready to take them on, what with 8 days of relentless cycling and over 1100 km wearing on my legs. It’s a bit daunting, to say the least.
And just as I was winding down the day, the skies seemed to have other plans. It started pouring right when I was tucking into the largest Wiener Schnitzel known to mankind, and boy, was it delicious. I’m hoping it packs enough fuel for tomorrow’s journey, depending on the whims of the weather. With the forecast not exactly on my side, I might just have to lay down low for a day or two until things clear up.
